From the depths of the Mediterranean rises a story of hope and responsibility. Montegrappa presents Sea Shepherd: Caretta caretta, created in collaboration with Sea Shepherd and iMilani, an Italian company devoted to sustainable innovation. Handcrafted in sterling silver and regenerated resin obtained from ghost nets abandoned on the Mediterranean seabed, this collection transforms the ocean’s deadliest waste into a declaration of love for the sea, and a tangible gesture of its protection.

Ghost Nets: An Invisible Threat 

Ghost nets and lost fishing gear represent one of the most serious environmental emergencies of our time. They account for up to 70% of the plastic mass found in the oceans and almost half of all material forming the so-called “floating islands” of marine debris. According to UNEP and FAO estimates, around 640,000 tonnes of ghost nets enter our oceans every year. In the Mediterranean, 65% of marine entanglements are caused by abandoned fishing lines and nets. Whales, seals, sharks, turtles and seabirds become ensnared or fatally injured, often suffering a slow and painful death. 

Through its Ghostnet Campaign, Sea Shepherd’s volunteers recover and remove tons of ghost gear from the seabed, restoring freedom to the sea. Alongside it, the Jairo Med Campaign protects the nesting beaches of the Caretta caretta turtle–an emblem of the Mediterranean and its fragile beauty. 

iMilani and the Sea Turtle Crates project 

Within its collaboration with Sea Shepherd Italia, iMilani recovers FADs, ropes and illegal fishing devices, transforming them, through a PSV (Second Life Plastic) certified process, into regenerated, fully recyclable material. From this material are born the Sea Turtle Crates: collapsible boxes donated to Sea Shepherd Italia volunteers and Italian maritime authorities for the rescue and care of sea turtles caught in ghost nets. The same regenerated material gives shape to the body of Sea Shepherd: Caretta caretta, continuing a shared journey of marine protection and sustainable innovation. 

A Tribute to the Oceans 

With this new edition of the Solidarity Series, Montegrappa renews its commitment to environmental stewardship following the acclaimed Victory of the Whale (2020). Sea Shepherd: Caretta caretta edition combines Italian craftsmanship and environmental purpose in a luxury writing collection available in the world’s finest boutiques from November 2025 in selected boutiques worldwide. 

Every detail celebrates the power and beauty of the Mediterranean ecosystem: a sterling-silver cap band engraved with wave motifs, a chevron silver clip, and a recycled-resin body adorned with gold-filled engravings of turtles swimming freely through the water. At the top of the cap, the Sea Shepherd’s Jolly Roger stands as a symbol of courage, compassion, and determination: a skull crowned with a trident and shepherd’s staff, reflecting the silhouettes of a dolphin and a sperm whale–reminders that the fate of humankind and the sea are inseparable. 

Produced in a numbered limited edition of 333 rollerballs and 333 fountain pens (18K gold rhodium-plated nib, cartridge/converter filling), the collection is accompanied by a custom presentation case featuring the Sea Shepherd logo and a polishing cloth.
