Each year over 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean, adding to the estimated 200 million tons already circulating through our blue planet. From microscopic fragments invading plankton to ghostnets entangling whales, plastic pollution infiltrates every level of the ocean’s ecosystem. Our ocean, the lungs of the Earth, is choking. It’s time for decisive action to turn the tide. It’s not too late, but we must act now.

Plastic
is a short film by director Favio Vinson and cinematographer Andres Gomez Orellana. It was born from a long-standing passion for the ocean and the desire to shoot underwater. At its core, the film addresses how our ocean, and ultimately we ourselves, are being choked by plastic. The ocean sustains and feeds us, so portraying the human body decaying into plastic felt like a powerful way to confront the global plastic pollution crisis.

“Studies show we ingest up to 5 grams of microplastics per week – 70% of it from the ocean. Data alone often fail to move people. With this project, we chose to raise awareness not through facts, but through emotion. Though fictional, we hope its message is strong enough to spark real awareness. Things moved quickly when Sea Shepherd expressed interest in the project. Their support allowed us to bring together an amazing team, led by professional free diver Stéphane Tourreau and actress Tasnim Jamlaoui as main cast. ” – Favio Vinson

“Plastic pollution forms a serious threat to our ocean.
There is a lot of talking, organizing congresses and writing reports.
The facts and statistics are clear, but we keep on rationally ignoring them.
That’s why we need a different approach.
We need artists committed to
serve our ocean.”
